Highland Fayre - gastronomical design!

Highland Fayre brochure coverI have always loved working with type and designing brochures. I love the challenge of producing creative layouts bringing together elements of colour, form, image and type.

In Spring 2008 I started working with Highland Fayre in the planning stages of
their Corporate Hamper Brochure. As they began to establish the contents of each hamper, I set about work on concepts for approval. Initially developed as a portrait style we soon decided to switch to a landscape format which we felt better suited the display of the hampers.

The cover of the brochure was to be kept very simple with the Highland Fayre ‘wax seal’ embossed and varnished.
With an elegant matt paper stock the brochure has a tactile and luxury feel enticing the customer to open and enjoy the goods inside!

Having had the concept approved, each spread of the 28 page brochure then had to be planned meticulously allocating space for text and images. This would later form the guide for photographer Dan Welldon. Every shot would be set up according to this early proof.

I had some input into the styling of the photography and in May I went to Edinburgh for the first day of a ten day studio session. Setting up the products for the prized £1000 luxury hamper took 4 hours alone as every product had to be
shown off at its best angle!

On completion of the shoot, I began the time-consuming process of preparing over 50 photographs, 29 of which were
cut-outs, for inclusion in the final artwork. This involved scaling Dan’s high resolution images to the size they would be
used in the printed artwork and converting the RGB files to CYMK.

The brochure proofs, with the images in place, were then checked very thoroughly by the client and after final text alts
and tweaks the artwork was passed to the printer in August well ahead of the September postal deadline.

It was great to work on a job where such care and attention to detail were taken. The Highland Fayre brochure has
a luxury feel and it’s a joy to turn each page and discover each hamper ‘lovingly’ portrayed in all its mouthwatering glory!
