10th birthday, Women Ahead achievements and ongoing work
November 2012
The 1st of November was a significant day for me - not only did it mark my son Jay’s 10th birthday (I started my business when he was just a few months old!) but I also launched the new Women Ahead website. The day brought much excitment with visits from family and friends, birthday tea etc but I was also very proud of our achievement in launching the new website. After hours of discussions, planning and testing with committee members Clare Dewar and Edith Adam, and several meetings, emails and telephone conversations with our website designer Mark Mander from Tayfusion we finally had the new site ready. It was a great privilage for me to make the announcement to our members. And a great month it has been with the launch of our 2013 Business Awards and a record 6 new members! www.womenahead.co.uk
Well, apart from my Women Ahead duties, I have managed to get some design work done this month! Over the past few weeks I have been working on logos for two local businesses. In development now is a new logo for long-established business Pitairlie Garage. There has been a garage on the site in Pitmeddie since WW2 but the current family-owned business will be celebrating 40 years next year.
I have also been working on a logo design for a brand new business - a children’s bookshop - Chongololo’s
(a chongololo is an African millipead!).
There has been ongoing work with the Highland Reserve Forces and Cadets, Pure Beauty, SAMH, French Dressing and I have been developing websites for Saltire Seed and Wm Fraser.
Quin Global, Parliamentary reception and DidiCareS
October 2012
Following meetings with Perth based business Quin Global, I began working with them to redevelop their marketing materials. We are currently working together on leaflets and a product catalogue. I also have a regular committment to design and produce their weekly e-newsletters.
During October I had the opportunity to visit the Scottish Parliament for a Women In Business networking reception. I had a great evening listening to presentations and meeting some very inspirational women. The event was hosted by MSP Annabel Goldie.
Over the last few months I have been working with an incredible lady called Elvidina Adamson-Macedo. I have been helping her to develop branding for her new business, DidiCareS. Having been an academic all her life, Elvidina has decided, at 70, to develop some products which are a culmination of her years of reseach in the area of pre-term baby development. Her products based around the sense of touch have been proven to boost the development of pre and full-term babies. With marketing advice from Alison Henderson at My Pinkie Promise, and business coaching from the Cultural Enterprise Starter for 6 Programme and Scottish Enterprise, Elvidina is well on her way to getting her products to market.
Association of Scottish Businesswomen
September 2012
This month I had the privilage of attending a conference and business awards ceremony hosted by the Association of Scottish Businesswomen at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh. The daytime conference was based around the theme of collaboration and I had the opportunity to meet some very inspirational Scottish businesswomen. Later, at the prestigious awards ceremony I was supporting four members of Women Ahead who were shortlisted for awards. I'm very pleased to say that our members won two of the three awards they were shortlisted for; Laura Jevons of Claremont Office Interiors won Most Enterprising Business and Gemma Ogilvie from Cosmetology (Scotland) Ltd won Employee of the Year. Lynsey Langlands and Roz Martin from Macmillan Cancer Support were shortlisted in the Charity category.
Plans are well underway for the 2013 Women Ahead Business Awards to be held in the Apex Hotel on the 9th of March next year. I have been working with my committee to review the award categories and judging processes. We will open the awards for application in November at a special event with MSP Jenny Marra. The Malting House Graphic Design Studio is very proud to be sponsoring the Business Awards and is looking forward to a great night!

Response!
July 2012
During July I worked with husband and wife team Gerry and Lucy Scott as they prepared to bring together their complimenting Physiotherapy and Pilates businesses under one roof in their new premises in Broughty Ferry. Having developed several logo options for discussion they chose this design which they felt best represented their new business. The logo was rolled out on their signage, business cards, flyers and Facebook page.
BioTechnics, Cambus O’May and Arrecca
June 2012
In June I was approached by BioTechnics, a chemical manufacturing business based near Montrose, to help them design a Distributor News portal for their website. The portal allows their partners around the world to access up-to-the-minute news and information about their cutting-edge products.
I am continuing to work with Cambus O’May (award-winning artisan cheesemakers) as they complete the building work on their new purpose-build creamery on the banks of the River Dee. Recent work has included road-side signage and information packs for new clients and distributors. I have also designed a label for their ‘newest’ cheese “Auld Lochnagar” which is matured for up to twelve months!
During the month I was also asked by my neighbour to help her create a logo for her new online baby boutique business. “Arrecca” (from the names of her two children Arran and Rebecca) sells cute designer-style clothing for children.
House banners for St John’s
Academy, Perth
May 2012
I was approached by the Headteacher of St John’s Academy in Perth to help them create artwork for some large format banners representing the school's house teams.
The children competed to have their artwork chosen for the banners. I used their designs to create digital artwork which were printed at 3 meters high and displayed within the school. I'm sure they will be a source of pride for many years to come!
It's great to be able to use my skills to support the local communities.
Celebrating the Olympic Games
April 2012
During April I began working with Tealing Community Council as they made preparations to celebrate the Olympics Games coming to the United Kingdom with their own community gala weekend.
The scope of the work included a logo, several promotional banners, posters and leaflets, newsletters and a commemorative programme featuring a map of the area marking sites of historical importance. I spent several hours roaming about the Angus countryside in the spring sunshine gathering reference material for the illustrations!
A Copy of a DVD recording of the Gala Weekend is available from Tealing Village website: www.tealingvillage.org

A new role as Chair of Women Ahead
March 2012
Another busy month as I prepared to take on the role of Chair of the Dundee and Angus business networking and support group Women Ahead. In my “inaugural speech” I thanked previous Chair, Sharron McIntosh from Apex Hotels, and set two goals for my year as Chair; one to review and commission a redesign of the existing Women Ahead website and the other to review the categories and judging process for our Annual Business Awards. I'm looking forward to a challenging year where I will oversea the organisation and plan the monthly events. www.womenahead.co.uk
During March I also had the opportunity to work with the Dundee Philatelic Society (that's stamp collectors to you and I!) and help them design a commemorative envelope cover and cancellation stamp in memory of Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his fellow explorers who died during their expedition to the North Pole in March 1912. I was able to use vintage photographs and maps held by Dundee Heritage Trust to illustrate the envelope. To mark the 100th Anniversary of the expedition and to launch the cover we visited Dundee's Lord Provost in his private rooms for morning coffee!
Heather’s Coffee Shop
February 2012
February has been a busy month with lots of work heading off to the printers; there's been business cards for Ewgeco; newsletters for Alternatives showing off their new branding and celebrating their move to new offices; I've been working with Perth Youth Orchestra to help them develop a special 50th Year logo; and I have also been working alongside Alison Henderson at My Pinkie Promise to provide promotional materials for the Dundee Personal Enterprise & Development Show which was held on the 16th of February. Other work in progress includes a series of large scale posters for the Highland Reserves Forces and Cadets, and I will be continuing to work with them on their annual report throughout March.
A highlight was a visit to the New Biz conference hosted by Perth College. I particularly enjoyed listening to the Keynote Speaker and Social Entrepreneur, Mike Jackson, who challenged us to consider our values and motives in business, and which experiences really add richness to our lives. Mike's own enterprise, Wildhearts in Action, provides micro-finance to help women in third world nations to start businesses. www.wildheartsinaction.org
I was particularly pleased to bring to a conclusion the logo design for Heather’s Coffee Shop which has been in development over the past few months. Heather and Martin at the Shaftesbury Lodge in Dundee are looking forward to opening their new business to a “grown-up” clientele in April and are busy making all the necessary preparations. Their new logo reflects the decor and heritage of the beautiful hotel in which it is situated.
Rebranding Cambus O'May Cheese
January 2012
Over the last few months I have been working with Ian Wilson, interim manager for the Cambus O'May Creamery based near Aboyne. They are currently building new premises on the banks
of the River Dee in the small town of Cambus O'May and they were keen to mark this by rebranding their packaging and marketing materials. Ian was particularly keen to promote their connection with Royal Deeside.
All of their cheeses are made to time-honoured family recipes and are named after local ‘landmarks’ such as Lochnagar and Lairig Ghru, apart from their new smoked cheese which is affectionately named ‘Auld Reekie’.
Not wanting to send a photographer into the mountains over the winter months I sourced photographs from keen hillwalkers to illustrate the new labels. Then in a rather hair-raising trip over Glenshee in the snow three days after Christmas, I went with photographer Angus Forbes to do the studio shots at the cold storage facility near Aboyne.
The artwork was then finalised and the labels printed locally before being delivered to Cambus O'May ahead of their launch at a large trade fair at the SECC in Glasgow.
For information on where you can buy Cambus O’May cheese, please look at their website; www.cambusomay.com
Ooo, la, la - Image make-overs the French way!
December 2011
December saw the culmination of several months work with image consultant and personal stylist Edith Adam. Re-branding her business ‘French Dressing’, Edith captures her heritage wonderfully and with great humour!
We began by developing a simple but stylish logo - Edith insisted it must have a hanger incorporated in the design - and then we rolled this out on all her promotional material including business cards, leaflets, gift voucher and a pull-up banner. Her leaflets and gift vouchers are particularly unique - as again by Edith's insistance - they reflect the design of a wardroble. Clean and simple on the outside, they open to reveal an orderly selection of shelves and rails with all the information you require to choose the necessary image make-over!
We also collaborated with Rosie Anderson at OnCreative to produce a fabulous website reflecting the style of the print materials. www.lefrenchdressing.co.uk
During December I re-connected with friends from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art - Bill and Amanda Conway, and at their request prepared a logo for their growing church ‘Tree of Life’ in Dagenham.
It is also a pleasure to be working again with Heather and Martin from the Shaftesbury Lodge; this time on the development of a logo for their new coffee shop. They are busy rennovating the rooms and hope to be open for business by April next year.
University of Dundee Library & Learning Centre Annual Report
November 2011
At 3pm on Monday 14th of November I received a call from the Library & Learning Centre at the University of Dundee - they wanted me to help them prepare the artwork for their annual report and they needed it for a meeting at 10am the very next day...
Needless to say I had rather a late night preparing the report but was only able to take on the work because they had already finalised all the text and images and had a fairly good idea where everything had to go. The artwork was signed off at midnight by Library Director Dr Richard Parsons and library staff were able to photocopy the document ahead of their meeting with University heads of departments the following day.
You can view a copy of the report at www.dundee.ac.uk/library
November was also an exciting month for my client Fairways; congratulations to Liz Jackson and her team on their nomination for the Perth Chamber of Commerce Star awards. Fairways also exhibited at a business convention in Glasgow for which The Malting House provided folders and information sheets giving them the professional edge over their competitors! We had to 'stop the press' just before production so that we could also add their newly awarded Investors in People accreditation!
Promoting enterprise amongst young people in Fife
October 2011
During October I collaborated with Dr Wendy Inglis Humprey from Otocos
to create a package of design and promotional material to support the launch of The Enterprise Game in Fife schools. The game which is backed by
Fife Economy Partnership and the Culture of Enterprise scheme will help students develop their entrepreneurial skills whilst learning to run their
own 'businesses'.
The design material included a leaflet, two folders, four pull-up banners,
a 3x3 network exhibition unit as well as supporting materials for teachers
to use alongside the game. This included two PowerPoint presentations at Primary and Secondary level, lesson plans and several worksheets.
The official launch will take place early in November at Carnegie Conference Centre in Dunfermline and is backed by many local businesses who also feature throughout the game.

Annual Awards Dinner and Masterclass
September 2011
September got off to a great start with the ASB Annual Awards Dinner and Masterclass at the Macdonalds Highland Resort in Aviemore. As a member of Women Ahead in Dundee, I went
to support our 3 nominated finalists; Alison Henderson from
My Pinkie Promise, Jennifer Inglis from Pure Beauty and Anne Riddel from Claremont Office Interiors.
The day kicked off with a networking lunch followed by a Media Masterclass hosted by Inverness-based companies TuMinds and Snow Media. We learned a great deal about using social media to market our businesses, picking up lots of useful tips!
The dinner began at 7pm with a wine reception hosted by Highland Council and a lovely 4 course dinner. The excellent after-dinner speaker was Rev Susan Brown, from Dornoch Cathedral, infamously known for marrying a certain pop star! We were on the edge of our seats as the awards were announced by ASB Chair Fiona Chung and representatives from Business Gateway. Woman Ahead are pleased to congratulate Anne Riddel on winning the Charity-Business Partnership award, and very proud of Alison and Jennifer in their achievements as finalists against very stiff competition.
The Malting House was pleased to support the ASB Awards Dinner and Masterclass by providing promotional and booking materials alongside the Awards Dinner Programme and Delegates List for the Masterclass.

Shaftesbury Hotel rebranding
August 2011
It's been a real pleasure to work with Heather and Martin from the beautiful Shaftesbury Hotel over the last couple of months. After presenting several options to them for their new branding we decided on an approach which we felt best reflected the history and decor of the old Jute Baron's mansion.
The motif on the logo is an interpretation of the ‘Dundee Lilly’ from the City's Coat of Arms and the styling reflects the original Victorian features and fittings that sit alongside Heather’s stunning interior design.
Having finalised the logo designs we produced stationery and
a simple promotional leaflet featuring some of Martins lovely photographs of the hotel.

Magazines and newsletters
July 2011
I'm continuing to work with the development agency Signpost International twice yearly on the design of their magazine Changing Lives. The magazine highlights the projects they are involved in throughout the Philippines, Uganda and India. As well as their overseas commitments, Signpost also have a number of projects which benefit the local community bringing vital regeneration to the area. You can find out more about Signpost International and their work on their website: www.signpost-international.org
I've also been working alongside Hope in Perth to refresh their branding. This was rolled out across a range of marketing material including posters, leaflets, business cards and their newsletter which is mailed to their supporters throughout Perth. I have also just completed a newsletter for their sister agency Alternatives based in Dundee.

Branding projects
May and June 2011
I've been working on several branding projects over the last couple
of months. Among them a design for the Murroes Flower Festival.
The flower-shaped logo was inspired by Murroes church stained glass windows with the typography reflecting the flair of organiser, florist Margaret Cook.

Secondly, I completed a re-design of all the marketing collateral for Choices,
a crisis pregnancy centre, based in Dunferline. They wanted their material to be clean and unfussy. The circular logo reflects the feeling of confusion someone might have on finding themselves with an unexpected pregnancy
yet the simplicity of the design gives a feeling of calm.
Also, in the pipeline over the next few months are branding projects for
Royal Deeside creamery, Cambus O’May; The Shaftesbury Hotel, Dundee;
a new Perth-based restaurant housed in a Georgian townhouse and a
start-up biotech consultancy from Dundee.
I'm looking forward to moving these projects forward.
Women Ahead Awards
May 2011
The Women Ahead Awards highlight the hard work, vision and dedication
of women in business and help raise their profile in the community.
This year I was extremely proud to see five of my clients shortlisted for awards; Karen Nichols from Scotia Heritage, Margaret Cook from Farmgate Floral Designs, Louise Beattie from Louise Beattie Photography, Elizabeth Waine from Alternatives and Jennifer Inglis from Pure Beauty. Particular congratulations go to Jennifer and Louise who were winners
in their categories: Jennifer for Shooting Star and Louise for Rising Star. Jennifer is also going to be representing Women Ahead in the Association of Scottish Businesswomen's national awards in September.
It's really great to see that good design can play a part in making a business successful.
The Awards dinner also marks the changeover of our committee and I am very honoured to be taking on the role of Vice Chair of Women Ahead and working alongside our new Chair, Sharron McIntosh from Apex Hotels, over the coming year.

Clinical Skills Managed Education Network
April 2011
This month saw the culmination of the work I have carried out for CSMEN. The NHS sponsored project began in 2008 as I developed the branding for the Network and continued with the development of the collateral for the two year pilot of the mobile skills unit (see news below - November 2008).
I completed a 64 page evaluation document which summarises the design and planning, implementation, results and recommendations of the unit. The unit has been used throughout Scotland, particularly in remote and rural communities and the islands, to give medical staff essential training.
As part of the work for CSMEN, I also produced a promotional DVD for the mobile unit with local film production business Man, Alive Studios. The filming took us all over Scotland as we captured footage in many rural communities.
Project Manager, Jeanette Stevenson, has since left her role at CSMEN to become Head of Education and Training at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and I would like to take this opportunity to wish her every success in her new position.
Launching the Malting House Blog
March 2011
In March I launched The Malting House Blog on WordPress.
It took me a little while to get to grips with the software but now it's fully up and running! I hope to use the blog to write topical articles that demonstrate how you can use design to effectively grow your business and increase your profit margins.
Articles published so far include a case study on the development of the Otocos logo and an essay on using
royalty-free photography.
http://maltinghouse.wordpress.com/
Otocos - re-brand
December 2010 - January 2011
Working in collaboration with Stephen Gorton from Fraktul Thinking,
I have been developing a new brand for Otocos, a science based business owned by Dr Wendy Inglis Humphrey. Wendy has grown Otocos, which stands for “on time, on cost, on spec”, to cover vast areas including project management, data mapping, research, innovation and organising science events. She wanted her new brand to reflect the many aspects of her work coming together to form useful solutions for her clients - “making sense of complexity”.
Having tried several designs using circular shapes we settled on this ring treatment which gives a sense of completion. The triangular elements reflect the three ‘dimensions’ of her business model.
I have been working with Wendy to help her ‘roll-out’ the new brand in her business stationery and client documents.
Funny Faces - 2011 School Calendar
November and December 2010
The wide range of clients and work
I undertake always keeps me on my toes, and I am always happy to try something new or take on a new challenge... During November and December I worked alongside the children and staff at Invergowrie Primary School to help them to create a 2011 calendar. Each child (180 primary pupils and 50 nursery children) drew a self portrait which was placed in the calendar on the month of their birthday. Having created all the artwork, I assisted the school with orders and had the calendars digitally printed to a very high standard. Affectionately titled “Funny Faces” due to the many times I laughed while scanning the drawings, the calendar was well received with lots of orders taken for grannies and grandads!
Wm Fraser - Heritage Branding
October 2010
Potato Merchants and Growers Wm Fraser approached me to assist them with developing a new brand for their long established family business. They wanted their branding to reflect their heritage in this market and also be suitable to be applied to their fleet of imposing, dark green trucks which have all being lovingly hand-lettered.
From the sample designs illustrated here you can see that I very much enjoyed developing these logos; researching and designing appropriate typographic and illustration treatments that would work well with the hand-lettered vehicles and reflect the heritage of the company.
The finished logo (top left) also had to be reproduced in single colour for invoices and stationery.
We have such a rich heritage of signage, design and typography in this country making this project a real pleasure to work on.
Farmgate Floral Design - branding and website
September 2010
Another busy month working with clients on a range of design projects: an 8pp leaflet for Fairways and an update to their stationary as they prepare to move to new premises, some collaborative work with My Pinkie Promise for the Gaelic MOD Showcase in Wick and a new logo, leaflet, stationery and website for florist Margaret Cook; www.farmgatefloraldesign.co.uk

Women Ahead Strawberry Tea in aid of Breast Cancer Care
August 2010
Women Ahead, the networking group I attend in Dundee, held a fundraising evening in Dundee City Chambers.
The Strawberry Tea was joint hosted by the Lord Provost, John Letchford, and attended by over 90 people - a mixture of Women Ahead members and their guests.
The event was well supported and members donated items for the goody bags which included a delicious cupcake from The Scarlet Bakery.
We are pleased to announce that our efforts were well rewarded and we have raised nearly £2000 for the charity.
TMG Blackberry App
July 2010
During July I have been partnering once again with Craig Anderson of On-Creative to develop and build a website for Nigerian company TMG. TMG have developed a ground-breaking application for the Blackberry mobile device aimed
at a client base in Nigeria but available worldwide.
Alongside the website, I have also been working with TMG
to produce business cards, exhibition units and promotional literature.

Fairways Recruitment and Business Support Services
June 2010
This month I have been working closely with Liz Jackson, the new owner of Perth-based recruitment business Fairways. Long established in the area, Liz wanted to rebrand the business with a bold and fresh approach, ushering in a new era and changes in the business which include utilising her strengths in the HR sector.
Alongside the new logo, which represents the 3 sides of her business, I also developed new stationery and have launched a new website in partnership with On-creative. The new site went live mid June; www.fairways-uk.com
Edinburgh Science Festival
May 2010
Two of my clients took part in the Edinburgh Science Festival this year; Ewgeco, working with Edinburgh Napier University, were promoting their utility monitoring devise, and the College of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee were showcasing their work in the field of Synthetic Biology.
I created two large scale banners to promote their work for the festival.
New Business Cards
April 2010
Well, I am forever telling my clients that your business cards can say a lot about you and your business, so I decided to smarten mine up a bit and commissioned printing company Glasgow Press to produce some lovely letterpress cards for me. They are printed on 100% cotton card and with the slight embossing of the letterpress have a rich, tactile feel. This traditional process, which is rarely used these days, works perfectly with the branding of The Malting House, reflecting the rich heritage of typography we have here in Scotland. And I've been getting lots of compliments on the new cards too!
Women Ahead Business Awards 2010
March 2010
I am delighted to be one of three women shortlisted for the Women Ahead Business Awards this year in the “Shooting Star” category; “A director, sole trader or partner of a business which has been in existence for two years or more... is financially sound and has a strong brand identity. Achieving success on a local, national or international level with the ability to grow.
The individual will be able to demonstrate strong leadership and vision.”
This is a great achievement for The Malting House Graphic Design Studio and I celebrated with clients and friends at the Awards Dinner at the Apex Hotel, Dundee.
Love is in the air
February 2010
This month two of my clients are taking part in the Wedding Fayre in the Overgate Centre, Dundee. I completed a glossy leaflet for photographer Louise Beattie; a great tool for showing off her exquisit photographs. I have also been helping Alison Henderson develop her Pinkie Promise brand creating a new style for Pinkie Promise Weddings. I have designed two exhibition banners and a postcard promoting the new wedding planning business.
Community Partnerships
January 2010
It was nice to get a break over the Christmas holidays after a busy finish to 2009. I began the new year by donating some of my time to design a logo for Invergowrie Primary School’s Parent Council.
The logo had to represent the partnership between parents, staff and community and how they work together for the benefit of the pupils.
The Council were very pleased with their new logo and letterhead.
Environment in Focus
December 2009
December was a busy month with a race to the finish to get a brochure printed for Nigerian environmental company Escanoe. Tochukwu Nnaji, a Masters student at the University of Dundee, had approached me earlier in the month to help him create branding and a brochure for his new company ready to take back to Nigeria for a launch in the new year. Escanoe have negotiated a contract with UK company Glasdon to be the sole supplier of street furniture, street cleaning equipment and litter bins into Nigeria. This new business has a great opportunity to challange attitudes towards their environment and help fight the spread of deseases such as malaria and diarrhoea.
On the right side of the Law
November 2009
During November I took in the delights of the autumnal Perthshire countryside as I did some research around Moncreiffe Hill for client Denise Baykal. Denise is in the process of setting up a law firm specialising in Mental Health Law. She wanted a logo that stood apart from other firms; a softer approach reflecting her work in this challenging area.
Congratulations to Lovina Roe who officially launched her company and website, Your Story Biographies, on the 3rd of November with a reception at The Brig, Bridge of Earn. It was great to attend the event and meet some of the characters she has written about in her biographies!
University of Dundee
October 2009
This month I have been working with Janette Moore of SULSA (Scottish Univeristies Life Sciences Alliance) to prepare five information booklets and two wall-planners for The University of Dundee's new life science post-graduates. We also produced a new recruitment leaflet to attract next years intake! Scientific photographs from current research were used throughout all the material.
Your Story Biographies
September 2009
September started with another Business Dynamics seminar. This time I enjoyed sharing with the 6th form girls of Kilgraston School what it is like to be a business owner! I set them a design and marketing project to be completed with a very tight deadline! All the girls were very focused and demonstrated lots of great ideas.
Also this month, I have been getting back into the networking circles and attending events hosted by Women Ahead, GCI and Business Gateway. It really is a great way to meet interesting people and potential clients! I met my new client Lovina Roe from Your Story Biographies at a Business Gateway Women into Business event.
I have been working together with marketing expert Alison Henderson from My Pinkie Promise to help Lovina get her new business off the ground. My part has been in the development of her brand; the logo, business stationery, website and other promotional material. Lovina is planning to launch the business at the end of October. If you are interested in having your biography written or having one written as a gift for a colleague, friend or family member then you can find more information on the website: www.yourstory-biographies.co.uk
Organic farming to international development...
August 2009
Well, August has been the busiest month I have had in a long time and with a very
wide range of clients too! From an organic potato farmer to an international development agency, the work couldn't be more different! I have been working with Andrew Skea of Skea Organics to re-design their company branding, website and promotional material. Andrew tried out the new material at a European conference.
I also had the opportunity to design a new-look magazine for Scottish-based development agency Signpost International, promoting their work in India, Uganda and the Philippines. Changing Lives magazine is delivered to thousands of supporters throughout the UK. You can download a pdf of the magazine from their website www.signpost-international.org
And finally, the promotional DVD I have been working on with Man, Alive Studios for the CSMEN Mobile Unit is almost finished. We have traveled the length and breadth of Scotland to gather footage. Stuart and Liam are finishing off the editing and I have been creating graphics for the case. The DVD will be viewed at medical conferences throughout Europe to showcase this unique facility.
Chambers Coffee House wins the City of Discovery “Eating Place of the Year 2009” Award
July 2009
I’m pleased to congratulate my client Chambers Coffee House on winning this prestigious award in only their second year of trading.
Chambers Coffee House & Restaurant was established in 2008 within the walls of a Category B listed building and is located in Dundee’s cultural quarter. The Malting House came on board in the early stages of development to design a logo which reflected their vision of a warm and welcoming environment. Only three months after opening, Chambers was nominated for “Eating Place of the Year 2008” but was narrowly defeated in the final. The Coffee House & Restaurant was nominated again in 2009 (the only eating place nominated two years in a row) and this time were delighted to accept the award.
Why not pop in for breakfast, lunch or an evening meal and enjoy some of Chambers award winning fayre? You can view their delicious menus at www.chamberscoffeehouse.co.uk
Business Dynamics
June 2009
I will be stepping out of my comfort zone once again this month as I join Colin Campbell of Business Dynamics to do a marketing seminar for students of Craigie High School.
Thirty 5th and 6th year students have the opportunity to do the two-day course which introduces them to many aspects of running a business. I'm hoping to focus my seminar on branding and will be asking the students to develop a logo and marketing material for a new product.
New Clients
May 2009
I'm pleased to be able to welcome some new clients into The Malting House this month; I've been working with Louise Beattie Photography, Cleaning Friend and My Pinkie Promise to help them develop their branding and marketing materials. I have also been preparing quotations for WGM Engineering and NL Theatre Productions.
Also this month I was approached by the Friends of the University of Dundee Botanic Garden to assist them in improving their marketing materials. We are currently working together on posters, leaflets and a 2010 calendar. "Friends" of the Garden are able to upload their photographs onto Flickr and it has been a pleasure to have access to this great resource. Copies of the calendar will be available to purchase from the Botanic Garden from the late June.
CSMEN Promotional DVD
April 2009
I have been out and about this month with Stuart and Liam, from award winning film company Man, Alive Studios, gathering material for a promotional DVD for the Clinical Skills Mobile Classroom. We began by filming medical students in Aberdeen using some of the highly technical manikins on board. We are also going to be filming in hospitals throughout Scotland in the coming weeks, taking in Edinburgh, Fort William and Oban. The finished DVD will be shown at medical conferences throughout Europe to showcase this unique facility.
The Malting House supports aid work in Cameroon
March 2009
I was pleased to be able to give design support to Kayleigh Thomson from Gate Church International as she organises a fundraising ceilidh for Banzo Baptist Children’s Hospital in Cameroon. The poster and tickets were created in a hand-drawn style to reflect Kayleigh's love of journaling.
Kayleigh will be visiting Cameroon in the summer as part of a medical mission to renovate and equip the children’s ward. So far the team have raised nearly £10,000 of their £25,000 target.
You can read the mission blog at www.inmedblogs.us/jessicamorgan
500th job!
February 2009
This month I ‘celebrated’ logging my 500th job and it seemed like a good time to reflect on how far the business has come in 6 years. When I left full time employment to care for my son I never planned to start a business but I responded to calls from clients and began to take on work I could do when he slept. The business gradually grew with referrals from happy customers and now with son and daughter off to school and nursery I am looking forward to growing the business further.
I have recently become a member of local networking group Business 9am and I'm enjoying getting out and about making new contacts and meeting people from all walks of life and business. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my clients who have been patient with me over the last few years as I have juggled a growing family with my expanding business!
