Much Mischief at Dyers’ Supper

I love this photo of my good friend Dr Mhairi Towler with her childhood pal, Michael Stirling, Creative Director, and Director of Mischief at the Beano!
It was taken at our recent Dyers supper where, as Deacon, I had the great pleasure of inducting six new members into the ancient craft. Fellow Dyers gave a warm welcome to Beth Bate, Shelley Barclay Horban, Gail Robertson, Sam Edmond, Craig Millar and Lynne Campbell.
Michael treated us to an engaging and enthusiastic talk on how advancements in printing have shaped the comic over many years, from Dennis’ iconic red and black jersey, to the recent inclusion of yellow and blue to enhance the Beano’s appeal to children.
Deacon Convenor of the Nine Trades, John Fyffe MBE gave a report on his recent activities, and mindful of the evening’s theme, brought along the colourful Comics and Characters panel from the Dundee Tapestry.
Celebrating all things Beano, new craft member, Lynne brought the evening to a memorable close, with a rendition of Sheena Wellington’s song, “The Dandy and the Beano”!

This was such an enjoyable read, full of character and lively storytelling. The way the event’s atmosphere and traditions were described made it easy to picture being there.
